All of us must share the same emotions about the terrible tragedy caused by Cyclone Nargis in Burma. The images that are on our TV screens, in the papers and available through the internet graphically illustrate the enormity of the human crisis. The Burma Children’s Fund sent money in the first 48 hours of the tragedy. It was used to get immediate food and medical needs to villages in the area around Laputta which was one of townships that was severely affected by the cyclone.
We are constantly monitoring the situation through our links with NGO’s and our own contacts. Our policy is that we shall respond to urgent humanitarian needs as they are identified and we will also fund the repair of damage in orphanages that we already support. Although we need to react now to requests for critical support we also need be prepared for the long haul. Reconstruction work and support for the homeless is bound to be an ongoing commitment for the foreseeable future. Also the price of rice and cooking oil are spiralling worldwide, this means that we will need to make greater provision for feeding the orphans and children that we support.
